The challenge of successfully achieving weight loss goals—especially ones marked as New Year’s resolutions—can be a bit overwhelming due to the pressure you may put on yourself to make each resolution a reality. While many people may abandon their goal to lose weight, you don’t have to; with effective strategies and a solid plan of action, weight loss is not only achievable but also sustainable.

Cara Maksimow, licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), CPC of Maximize Wellness Counseling and Coaching, offers practical tips for using the power of S.M.A.R.T. goals to stick to your New Year’s resolutions:

Starting over on January 1 with a resolution is a start, but…we don’t get specific enough about HOW we are going to do it. We may say we want to “get healthy” or “eat better” or even “go to the gym” but these are all so broad and vague. Be S.M.A.R.T. and write it down. We are more likely to stick to a plan if it is written out and we follow it each day. Do some regular check-ins. Make it S.M.A.R.T. That means Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Result-focused and Timely. So instead of saying you want to lose weight, be more specific. Ask yourself what you want to see, not what you don’t want to see and keep the resolutions Result-focused. Lastly, set a time frame. You may need to make small steps and reevaluate every week or month, but make sure to have a time frame with an end in sight.

Once you have framed your weight loss resolution around S.M.A.R.T. goals you are ready to put your plan into action. Toni Coleman, LCSW, CMC, internationally-known psychotherapist and relationship coach also offers three effective strategies for success:

Make a concrete plan with actionable steps

Come up with a meal plan for eating at home, during [the] workday, when out with friends, etc. Deciding what food you should include and those you should avoid, coming up with lunch options and options for what you can eat when out will all be  part of your plan. It will also be useful to go through your kitchen and get rid of unhealthy junk food and replace it with better choices.

Arrange time in your schedule to work your plan

You won’t be successful if you don’t set aside the time to shop for and cook/prepare healthy meals. This may involve leaving the office earlier, using weekend time to cook in advance and/or any other adaptations that will be necessary.

Learn more about nutrition, cooking and healthy eating

For some people, they will require help with making good food choices and learning what works best for them. Taking a class, consulting a nutritionist or any other resource that might be needed must be located and put in place to make this work.
