Weight Loss Obstacles & How to Avoid Them

Losing weight isn’t always easy. There are going to be bad days on your weight loss journey – days when you feel like throwing in the towel. Prepare for difficulties by first recognizing the obstacles that lie ahead on your weight loss path, then develop strategies for overcoming these obstacles. By creating an action plan, you’re now taking a positive step towards reaching your goals. Here are common weight loss obstacles and tips to help you avoid them:

Unrealistic Expectations

When first starting a new diet, many people have grand visions in their heads of the end result. While it’s OK (and even encouraged) to visualize yourself as healthier and more slender, it’s important to keep your expectations reasonable. Losing weight takes time and effort – it isn’t something that happens overnight. Some dieters become disillusioned and even quit trying when results don’t come as fast as they’d like.

The key to avoiding this obstacle is patience. While you may see initial results in a matter of days or weeks, true weight loss may take longer to achieve. Staying on a restrictive diet for that long isn’t feasible, but adopting lifestyle changes that support a healthy weight is something you definitely can stick with for the long term.

Negative Self-Talk

Negative self-talk is one of the most sneaky enemies you’ll face on your journey to a healthier, more slender body. Many dieters do this without even realizing it. By speaking or thinking in a negative way, you’re more likely to feel discouraged and may even end up quitting. The first step in eliminating negative self-talk is to recognize when you’re doing it. Monitor your words and actions for phrases like these:

“I can’t do this.”
“I’ll never fit into that swimsuit.”
“I’m a failure.”

When you hear yourself saying, or even thinking negative thoughts about losing weight, stop! You can even command yourself out loud, “Stop!” This will halt the negative thought process and allow you to challenge it. Replace those negative words with positive ones, for example:

“I can do this.”
“I will fit into that swimsuit.”
“I’m not a failure, I just had a bad day and that’s ok.”

Speak lovingly to yourself. Offer yourself the same encouragement you’d give your best friend, and watch positive things happen!

Poor Preparation

Temptation is everywhere – from the birthday cake at your office party to the shelves of your favorite supermarket, and many other places in between. Make preparation your weapon in the battle against temptation by keeping healthy snacks on hand at all times. Simply by popping a healthy snack (like an apple and a sandwich bag of almonds) into your handbag or desk, you can arm yourself against tempting treats that may derail your dietary efforts. When it comes to your main meals, invest in Medifast packaged meals so you’ll never have to struggle with what to prepare. Scientifically designed to facilitate your weight loss, these meals are well-balanced and properly proportioned – and they taste great!

Comparison to Others

Support from others is crucial when it comes to losing weight, for example, people who recruit a workout buddy are far more likely to stick with an exercise plan than their solo counterparts. Being part of a group gives a sense of camaraderie, however, beware of comparing yourself to others. While it can be inspiring to look at someone else’s success story, it can also be misleading. You cannot expect the same results as someone else even if you follow the exact same diet plan, because everyone is different. What’s more, people have different body types. Even after reaching your goal weight, you may not look like a swimsuit model – and that’s ok. Embracing your individuality and implementing a personalized plan is the trick to avoiding this obstacle.
