Vitamins are a group of organic substances that are essential for life. There are two different types of vitamins: fat-soluble and water-soluble.
Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the fatty tissue in the body. They are more easily absorbed when eaten with dietary fats.
Vitamin A is essential for healthy teeth and skin, and promotes good vision. Foods rich in vitamin A include eggs, dairy products, green leafy vegetables, and orange and yellow fruits and vegetables.
Vitamin D is the “sunshine vitamin” as it is made when the body is exposed to sunlight. It is important because it helps the body absorb calcium, which is essential for healthy teeth and bones. You get Vitamin D from spending time in the sun or taking a vitamin supplement.
Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps the red blood cells and skin stay healthy. Foods that contain vitamin E include vegetable oils, nuts, seeds and green leafy vegetables.
Vitamin K helps the blood to clot properly. It is found in green leafy vegetables, like spinach, Swiss chard, lettuce, and broccoli.
Water-soluble aren’t able to be stored by the body and must be used right away. Excess amounts of these vitamins are excreted in the urine.
The B-vitamins are a group of several different vitamins that help the body to make or use energy from the food you eat. Fish, poultry, eggs and dairy products are all rich in the B-vitamins.
Vitamin C is essential for proper immune function and growth and repair of the tissues in your body. Citrus fruits, broccoli, tomatoes and berries are all good sources of Vitamin C.
