A common objection to eating healthy is the cost. From organic food to the constant grocery store outings for fresh produce, many feel that the dollar menu holds much more satisfaction per dollar ratio. While eating healthy may initially appear to be more expensive, the long-term costs associated with being unhealthy may change your tune. Being unhealthy could be costing each individual $8,000 per year! This could act as some serious motivation for those considering making a life change. Although the initial cost of eating healthy or joining a weight loss program may seem daunting, when you look at the long term cost of being unhealthy, it is clear that the numbers point to a healthy lifestyle.

Choosing a plan to get you on the road to a healthy weight is critical for a healthy life regardless of age or gender, however this becomes even more imperative as we get older. Many overweight individuals may knowingly or unknowingly face a myriad of health challenges such as diabetes. In these circumstances the cost of obesity is even more critical as being overweight is leading risk factor for developing diabetes. When weighing the health risks of obesity, it is important to consider some key statistics. Reports from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) show that over one-third of the U.S. population is obese. This reflects data from the 2014 National Diabetes Statistics Report, which shows that 29.1 million Americans have diabetes and this figure includes 8.1 million undiagnosed individuals. The amount of prediabetic Americans soars at 86 million. These are just a few of the serious risks of being overweight and even small, consistent weight loss efforts can make a significant difference in one’s health status. The American Diabetes Association estimates the cost of living with diabetes at about $13,700 per year just on medical expenditures and $7,900 of that cost is attributed specifically to diabetes. The effects of being overweight not only significantly impact health but also impact finance, and those are avoidable costs. If you have been frustrated by weight loss programs in the past, the good news is that not all programs are created equal. Medifast California is one of the few weight loss programs clinically proven through a number of published controlled studies. Since 1980, more than 20,000 doctors nationwide have recommended Medifast Programs to their patients and more than one million customers have safely used Medifast.

This infographic titled, A Heavy Price to Pay accounts for all types of costs associated with being unhealthy.
