Implantable Cardiac Devices: Medical Technology for Heart Problems

Implantable cardiac devices figure among the very expensive and highly sophisticated equipment now in existence because of the advancement of medical technology. People with heart problems would do well to not only follow the dietary instructions given to them by their doctors, but also to educate themselves on some of the implantable cardiac devices available. Most people have heard about the pacemaker and have some concept of how it works. However, few are familiar with the automatic implanted cardiac defibrillator (AICD) or the left ventricular assist device (LVAD). The AICD can range in size from that of a 9-volt battery to the size of a wallet. Yes, it's usually very easy to palpate it through the skin. The upper left chest is the typical area of placement, but it could also be implanted into what's known as the left upper abdominal quadrant. The job of the device is to sense abnormal heart rhythms that are life-threatening; these rhythms are known as ventricular fibrillation (VF) and ventricular tachycardia (V-tach). The heart has its own natural pacemaker and electrical system to ensure it continues to pump. V-tach is a condition in which the heart is beating fast–sometimes too fast to even allow the its chambers enough time to properly fill with blood before contracting. This, in turn, means that not enough oxygenated blood reaches the rest of the body, including the brain.

Ventricular fibrillation, another dysrhythmia, can be loosely thought of as a quivering heart instead of a pumping one. Although the heart could have strong electrical activity during VF, that activity is taking place haphazardly. Just as an automated external defibrillator (AED) was developed to detect these rhythms and attempt to correct them through the delivery of an electrical shock, so an AICD, which might also contain a pacemaker, is designed to do the same. If a person is shocked while conscious, he or she will experience great discomfort. Other people near or even touching him or her will not be shocked. People with heart problems tend to stay in close contact with their doctors if anything out of the ordinary occurs; it's no different when they receive a shock from an AICD. They're usually instructed to phone their physician even if all appears fine after a shock; however, if they experience certain symptoms such as shortness of breath or the device shocks them more than twice in a 24-hour period, they're advised to call 911 or go to the hospital.

One of the newer provisions of medical technology in the area of implantable cardiac devices is the left ventricular assist device. The heart contains four chambers, the two lower ones are the ventricles. The left ventricle is unique in that it contains the most muscle, is the strongest, and works the hardest. When functioning properly, it pumps oxygenated blood to the aorta, the largest artery in the body, for system-wide distribution.   7. Mal functioning displays, which give ambiguous or confusing data, such as vital signs.
  8. Exposure to the high level of radiation when CT scans is PERFORMED. The study reveals that 6,000 additional cancers are provoked by excessive radiation received by patients.

FDA Puts a Stop to Implants: Medical Devices Seized

Everyone values their health. We cannot place a value on our health and safety. When Americans place their health in the hands of a surgeon they expect to receive the best of treatment. A patient sincerely hopes that all factors related to medicine will have the highest of standards. Safety must be first.

To keep with the highest safety requirements, the FDA has seized medical devices due to risk to patients. A Union, New Jersey facility has been found to have medical devices that do not meet medical standards. Concerns are in regards to the sterility of the medical devices.

Shelhigh, Inc. manufactures implants for surgical procedures such as open-heart surgery. Other devices involved in the issue include soft-tissue patches involved in neurosurgery. Implants for abdominal and pelvic surgical procedures are suspect, as well. Their products are available for use for both adults and children. As many as 19 items have been seized and recalled.

Doctors have been warned to use other products to avoid risk to patients. Adults and children who may have received one of the devices manufactured by Shelhigh, Inc. are urged to call their doctor for advice. Patients who have one of the Shelhigh products should be monitored for infection. Also, doctors should be certain to check for effectiveness of the Shelhigh product for the duration of the product's life. On April 17, 2017 officials from the FDA seized the medical devices due to concerns about the manufacturing process of such devices at the Shelhigh, Inc. facility. Based on inspection information discovered in the fall of 2016, the facility was not following the appropriate safety guidelines. Shelhigh, Inc. was not properly monitoring the cleanliness of areas where such items were manufactured. Expiration dates on the products may be inaccurate. Shelhigh, Inc. did not properly back up the expiration dates of such products with scientific data.

Patients with immune deficiencies are at the greatest risk of developing complications from Shelhigh, Inc. products. Pediatric patients are also susceptible to this safety risk.

Shelhigh, Inc. was contacted about concerns related to inspections last fall. The FDA brought to the attention of Shelhigh, Inc. the numerous violations of proper manufacturing procedure for medical devices. Two letters were sent to Shelhigh, Inc. forewarning the facility of the actions to be taken should the proper measures to remedy the violations not be implemented.


LACE: A New Medical Device that Can Help Save Lives

An amazing new device is on the horizon that will help doctors determine who will be readmitted to the hospital after 30 days of discharge, or who may possibly die. This new devise can potentially save lives by predicting the severity of the illness at the time of discharge. The Canadians doctors who developed the devise with they call LACE maintain that the device will be able to predict which patients are at the highest risks for complications and possible death and that in turn will predict which patients are going to need more support and medical care.

Dr. Carl van Walraven of the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute studied the effectiveness of the device with 5,000 mostly middle-aged patients suffering from acute coronary syndromes, cancer complications, and heart failure. The research was conducted among 11 different Ontario hospitals from 2012 to 2016.

The research showed that 8 percent of the patients had died or were readmitted to the hospital within a month. Of that group of 8 percent, 9.4 percent of them had been unexpectedly readmitted to the hospital within 30 days after their initial discharge. Taking this info into consideration, the researchers were able to come up with a mathematical formula to predict in advance what kind of patients would be the most critical patients upon the initial release.

The acronym LACE: length of stay ("L"), acuity (how severe the symptoms are) of admission ("A"), comorbidities (other health issues)("C") and number of visits to the emergency room ("E"), are the factors which are being measured to determine the risk of re admittance to the hospital or death within one month of the original hospital discharge. Patients will get a score up to 19 and the higher the score the greater the risk.

The details of the full study were published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

When it comes to the latest in medical technology many would argue that the most interesting or greatest inventions are the ones that keep people alive. I however, would argue that these inventions only prolongs a person's suffering, and for this reason anything that would artificially keep a person alive, will not be on this my list of the five greatest medical industry technological advancements this decade.
