Conversations regarding self-improvement have spiked in recent years as we constantly search for effective ways to feel our best from the inside out. Of course, health is a key component to improved self-perception because when you eat foods that give you energy and nutrients, it happens to help boost your confidence and make you feel like anything is possible. When you think of your ideal self, what do you look like, and how do you feel about yourself and the people around you? Perhaps more self-confident, happier, healthier or more organized?
As you explore the concept of your best self, here are 4 simple and fun strategies to help you make it a reality:
Celebrated Harvard Business School associate professor and social psychologist Amy Cuddy has legitimized power posing as a strategy for confidence-building and has backed up her findings with extensive research. By simply improving your posture and striking a confident pose, you can begin to improve your self-esteem and reduce anxiety. In fact, Cuddy’s research has demonstrated that power posing reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
The many benefits of exercise are discussed widely and extend beyond staying physically in-shape to more holistic wellness. Research published in the International Journal of Environmental Health Research demonstrates that the environment where you exercise plays a more significant role than previously thought. Compared to exercising indoors, a pleasant outdoor environment has been shown to increase self-esteem in addition to the health benefits including decreased blood pressure.
A sharp mind can provide mental clarity, improved memory and a better overall outlook. Strategies to keep your brain healthy include many of the same ways we keep the entire body healthy, such as following a healthy diet, regular exercise and emotional balance. Activities that stimulate the brain are also important to ensure “plasticity,” or the way the brain adapts due to changes within the body or based on external environment, is better preserved with age. Engaging in math problems or word puzzles or simply reading a good book are strong examples of ways to stretch your “mental muscles.” Trying new activities that require both manual dexterity as well as mental effort are also effective. Examples include painting and drawing.
Research has shown that connecting with others and building strong social ties has been shown to play an important role in living a healthier and more fulfilling life. Technology presents many benefits when it comes to staying connected, but it is important to schedule time to engage with friends and family for quality time. When you can’t see each other face-to-face, make time for a phone call or a friendly message.
