Ever find yourself in a bit of a summer slump? It’s frustrating when you are not able to fully enjoy one of the most beautiful times of the year! If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. In fact, in 2015 an estimated 135 million Americans had not taken a vacation over a period of 12 months. Beyond the traditional vacation, this also means less time for general relaxation and reflection. Every summer brings with it an opportunity to improve upon the previous season, but it seems more and more challenging to figure out how to get there.

If you need a boost of inspiration, here are 10 tips to help make this summer better than the last or even the best yet:

1. Read a Great Book

Plan some time to take in a great summer beach novel, a humorous exploit or historical adventure.  Researchers at Stanford University conducted studies showing how reading encourages blood flow to the brain, making it a great cognitive exercise. What better way to escape than in a story?

2. Take Time to Learn Something New

Summer is a great time to discover something new. Enroll in a class online or perhaps at a local college. Learn a new skill to help you personally or professionally. Research shows that acquiring new skills can boost your brainpower.  You don’t have to hit the traditional classroom either; gather some friends and take a paddle board lesson or learn to cook at a local restaurant.

3. Try Something New Outdoors

If you are accustomed to a pleasant stroll or bike ride, try a new activity with friends. Get out and enjoy the nice weather while getting in a little fun fitness. Don’t be afraid to get creative! Fly a kite, play bocce ball or rent a scouter! Even just a simple evening walk with the dog is a perfect way to unwind on a summer evening.

4. Start a Garden

Connecting with nature is a healthy and relaxing pastime. The warm summer temperatures are a wonderful time to sow some seeds and watch your plants grow. Added bonus: who doesn’t love fresh vegetables, herbs and flowers?

5. Take a Swim

Whether in your own pool, your favorite public pool or the Pacific Ocean, go for a swim! It’s a great way to relax while beating the summer heat. If you don’t swim, why not use this summer to learn how.

6. Get on the Road

Take a road trip to get out and discover some new sights and locales, even if they’re in your own city. Invite friends and family and make it a memorable occasion for all. From Lake Tahoe to the Pacific Coast Highway, there are endless options for summer fun.

7. Share Your Time

Summer can be a rough time for those who are less fortunate. Find a place to volunteer your time. Sharing your time with others is a great way to meet new people and engage in activities to positively impact the lives of others – and your own!

8. Make Time to Unwind

While you make plans to get the most out of your summer, be sure to plan time to unplug. Whether you just plan some alone time to meditate or a quiet moment to enjoy a sunset, quiet time makes a huge difference for a busy mind… so put down the phone and take a moment for yourself.

9. Get More Organized

The summer is a great time to try out a new organizational tool. Download a new app or pick up a new tool at your favorite hardware or crafts store or finally get the garage or office in order. Getting more organized, both physically and digitally, now will get the fall off to a smart start.

10. Plan for the Rest of the Year

Use the summer to take a pause to reflect on the past months and prepare for a successful continuation of the year. Vow to make the most of every moment!
