10 Habits for a Healthy Morning Routine

Habits don’t have to be bad—the same energy can be applied to form good habits as can to form bad ones. There’s no better time in the day to practice good habits than in the morning. Get your day started off right by developing a ritual that includes at least a few of these habits. Make your routine 30 minutes or less so that it’s sustainable and works even on weekends.

1. Stretch
Whether it is 10 minutes of yoga or simply a series of stretches in bed, make sure you incorporate some stretching into your wake-up routine. It will help your circulation and keep you limber. Stretching every morning can also relieve anxiety and increase your lung capacity.

2. Meditate
If even for only 5 minutes, take some time to sit quietly every morning. Focus on your breath and everything in the moment. Try not to let your mind wander. During this time, you build the capacity to focus and relieve stress. Meditation also helps you access more creativity and improves memory function all day long.

3. Sip Hot Water with Lemon
Drink a 16-oz glass of warm or hot water with a few drops of lemon juice. There are many proven benefits to this practice, including aiding digestion, balancing pH, boosting your immune system and helping to control potentially harmful hunger cravings. If you’re a coffee drinker, drink this before your first cup of coffee—lemon water alkalizes your body, making your pH higher, while coffee is more acidic, so everything balances out.

4. Read
Take at least a few minutes to read something that requires effort, thought and concentration. Your brain is like a muscle. It needs intellectual stimulation to stay agile and strong.

5. Uplift
Send a text message or leave a handwritten note for a loved one that sends an uplifting message. Paying it forward to others in this way is one of the best means to feeling uplifted yourself.

6. Move Your Body
If you don’t have time for exercise, you can still move your body for at least 10 minutes. Do something fun, like playing your favorite music and dancing around your room. You can also go for a walk, a jog, ride your bike or any number of physical activities you might enjoy that don’t have to eat up too much time.

7. Affirm
Give yourself encouragement by looking in the mirror and talking to yourself as though you were talking to your best friend. What do you admire? What will you do with your day? Celebrate you everyday!

8. Eat
Always start the day with a nutritious breakfast. It sets your metabolism for the day and keeps your brain functioning at a higher level. Eating a balanced, healthy meal in the morning can also prevent potentially harmful food cravings from cropping up later in the day.

9. Smile
This one takes no time at all and makes one of the biggest differences. Smiling makes the muscles in your face send a message to your brain that you’re happy. So even if you don’t feel like it, remember to smile every morning—and preferably all throughout the day!

10. Set a Goal
Make at least one goal that you can realistically achieve within each day. This will give you a sense of accomplishment at the end of each day that will carry over into the next morning to help fuel your healthy routine. Write it down somewhere, then cross it off before the end of the day.

If you follow a morning routine made up of a few of these practices every day, you’ll set yourself up for long-term success and happiness. Create a short routine that you enjoy and that you can do every day, including on the weekends. This is a great way to set the tone while also creating healthy habits that will last you a lifetime and have a positive effect daily.
